about
I was thinking about how much Billy Bragg's unapologetically leftist lyrics meant to me as a teenager, when neoliberalism was just getting going. Now that capitalism is imploding and the people in power are jockeying for the title of Last White Man Standing, I decided to write a folk song calling out my country as the racist, extractivist, violent, hypocritical bully it always has been, continues to be, and promises to be in what future it has left. No metaphors or ambiguity for a change.
lyrics
Canada, Canada,
You have stolen land enough to become
Number one enemy
Of the people you should be
Making sure survive.
They nourished you, kept you alive
When you were new. Your power grew.
Strong and free, Canada,
You believe in standing up for the rights
Of the whites around the world,
Bombing brown lands, flags unfurled
Wherever profit lies
Or maybe you organize
A military coup when invited to.
Fair of mind, Canada,
So much kindness handed out overseas.
Refugees now enjoy
Newer homes than you destroyed.
Keep them safe inside
From your burning trees, teach them to hide
If they ever see RCMP.
Canada, why would we
Ever stand guard for thee?
